Xuan Paper Industry
Xuan Paper is a pure, typically white and moth resistant Chinese handmade paper which is produced in Jing county of East China, Anhui Province. Today, Jing County has more than 200 workshops that employ over 15 thousand employees to produce the best rice paper in the country. As the important exporting industry of Anhui, Xuan paper industry is facing tough challenges coupled with opportunities from many directions.
A change that would happen if design could involve in the industry and become the active promoter.
• To trigger innovation in papermaking technology and richening paper types.
• To drive new applications and correct people’s deep-rooted misunderstanding that Xuan paper can only be used as calligraphy and painting surface here in China.
• To achieve good communications between designers, researchers, local institutions, associations, companies and governments.
• To bridge the gap between different cultures and show beauty and complete culture of Xuan paper through design to people at home and abroad.
• To integrate social and academic resources and nurture domastic and overseas market by interactive training courses, workshops domestically, exhibitions overseas and internet platform etc.
Our design experiments are trying to express that preserving tradition is not just about continuing to repeat the things people have always done. We keep the essence and the rest has to be changed to fit modern lifestyles and sensibilities. Then the question is how we preserve the best parts and what we should do for the future.
