Bag Design for Life and Death
The background is Wenchuan Earthquake of May 12, 2008. Everyday objects seemed to be infected with the sad death, “shoes, bags, pens, notebooks, school badges, reed, white flowers, yellow flowers, debris, cracking roads, tears, the black sleeves, cold bodies, coffins, shroud, short messages sent from cell phones, gloves, Kedouwen, mineral water bottles, masks, white gauze, electrocardiogram, candles, tents, vegetables, instant noodles, red stitches on quilts, medicine, the fluid infusion sets, blood, etc. “, in which “Kedouwen” was quoted from a father who lost his son in the earthquake, could hardly control himself to hold a pen and the words he wrote were almost beyond recognition because of his deep sorrow.
The Chinese culture tends to escape mentioning the topic of death. In the view of life and death, different cultures have accumulated a wealth of experience either theoretically or technically. The bag, being regarded as the carrier of emotion, expresses the personal view on death, funeral, memorial ceremony and life as well.
